2011 Streak 62/365: Walking - 7.1 miles, Time - 3 hrs, Weather - wet and cold
Overnight it rained heavily, which we hoped would ease off but in the morning there was still rain; slightly gentler but still rain. This could have been a problem because, being our last day, we were carrying our luggage and my bag is not very waterproof. But the rain continued to ease and in the end nothing was soaked.
We started the day by walking along the seafront, where there are a number of docking stations for Barcelona's bike scheme (Yes they have their own version of Boris Bikes). I think the London ones look nicer but undoubtedly these do the job just as well. On the whole Barcelona is a better cycling city than London because the streets are on a grid and most of them are one way. There are also a lot of traffic lights and places for pedestrians to cross, which means the traffic is not whizzing around at high speed. So apart from the arterial roads traffic is not as intimidating.
All the people I saw on bikes were just getting around and were quite relaxed. I didn't see f the tense competitiveness that can characterise cycling in London. I am keen on the idea of cycling as casual transport - something that does not require special clothing or preparation. It is a civilised and enjoyable way of getting about. I wonder if there is an index of cities which plots ease of cycling against quality of life?
The day was spent walking around the old town area, with café stops and a long lunch. Again I was struck by the variety with maze like tiny streets close to broad streets. There was always something to see. Yet again it was another enjoyable day.
Barcelona is a really good place to visit.
