2011 Streak 59/365: To Barcelona

2011 Streak 59/365: Walk - 4.61 miles, Time - 1hr 50min, Weather - shirt sleeves

February has been a grey, damp, miserable month but I have survived it in good spirits for two reasons: the first is the 2011 challenge which as forced me to get outside and use my eyes; the second is a planned treat to look forward to - a trip to Barcelona. So the last day of the month saw me on a plane looking down on the Pyrenees, seeing clearly how they were formed by being scrunched-up, feeling awe at the cyclist who go over them on the Tour de France, and being elated at having a dramatic outlook.

Soon we were flying over the sea; coming into land and below was the blue of the Mediterranean and a port stacked with containers, looking like a huge lego kit. Wonder of wonders the sky was blue and the sun was shining. Spirits were lifted.

On arrival in the centre of the city, after wandering through some of the small streets on the  way to our hotel, we came to wonderful park (Parque de la Ciudadela) full of ornate sculptures and ponds and people sitting, talking and relaxing. It was then I realised how far we were from home. In February in England it is rare to seen people at their ease as we are mostly huddled inside our coats; moving to keep warm rather than sitting outside, relaxing.

Our hotel was in Poblenou an area which used to be industrial but was redeveloped with the coming of the Olympics in 1992. We were just a couple of minutes from the sea.

Our evening was spent walking along the beach - a wonderful, straight, 2 mile strip; very open, very clear.

We saw plenty of opportunities for recreation and exercise. There were no end of people running along the front (it is an obvious and perfect place), or cycling. In addition there were open basketball courts with people informally practising and a couple of outdoor gyms. Increasingly an important part of the infrastructure of any city are places to keep fit. Barcelona must rate highly for this.

I love outdoor gyms, or playgrounds for adults, especially if they have a good view. The sea front is the perfect place. So my picture today is of somebody working on their upper body.
